ICWSM’25: Exploring Urban Diversity and Spatial Dynamics

Earlier this year, I (Ethel Elikem Mensah) submitted my first conference piece related to my PhD work to the prestigious International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media (ICWSM), a leading venue in my field. To my delight, my poster submission was accepted! I was absolutely thrilled! I had spent considerable time questioning whether I was truly ready and contemplated postponing my submission until my concept felt “perfect." Yet, I’m proud that I didn't wait.

In June, I traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, where I attended the ICWSM conference. It was an incredible opportunity to share my research during the poster session, engage in stimulating conversations, and explore potential collaborations with fellow researchers.

My research leverages data from location-based online services such as Google Maps to investigate socio-cultural patterns in urban environments. At the conference, I presented my study titled: “Ethnic Diversity and Spatial Dynamics in Google Maps Reviews: Insights from a German Border City” In this study, I analyzed how Google Maps reviews, paired with demographic data, illuminate the spatial dynamics of specific ethnic groups - namely Syrian, Turkish, and French communities—in Saarbrücken, Germany. This work demonstrates how digital traces can provide valuable insights into urban socio-cultural life and inform policy-making around inclusion and spatial equity.

Attending ICWSM was not solely about research; I also embraced the chance to explore Copenhagen—a truly serene and welcoming city. On the evening of June 23rd, I wandered through the streets, marveled at the charming, colorful houses along Nyhavn, and discovered a bonfire for Sankt Hans Aften (Midsummer’s Eve), a delightful Danish tradition celebrating the arrival of summer. It was a magical experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to try any traditional Danish cuisine (unless pastries count!), but this only fuels my desire to return. A heartfelt thank you to Ingmar Weber and Vikram Cannanure for their unwavering support throughout this journey.
